Leslie Hoover-Lauble

Born January 17,1956 in Palo Alto ,California to Herbert “Pete” Hoover (1927-2010) and Meredith McGilvray Hoover (1927-2015). I joined older brother Stephen (1949-2020) and Michael (1951-1979).
My family moved to Geneva,Switzerland when I was almost 3. We relocated to Orsay,France when I was 5. On our way to Geneva, we stopped in New York, where I met my great granddad for the first time. On our arrival back in the States, we stopped in New York again to see great granddad. He would die the following year.
My family relocated to Southern California, where my parents remained until Dad’s death.
I graduated from  San Marino High School in 1973.
I married in 1974, and welcomed my daughter Jennifer in 1976, and my son Stephen in 1978. I divorced their father in 1980.

I have been married to my current husband, Todd, since 1982. We have a son, Hagen born in 1986.

Having not entered college earlier,  Todd and I began at Oregon State University when we were both 26. I majored in Family Studies with an emphasis on early child development.
We relocated from Corvallis , Oregon to Hood River, Oregon in 1989. In 1990, we relocated 12 miles outside of Hood River to begin running a u-catch fish farm on our property. We continued doing this for 11 years. After closing that business, Todd became a well respected upholsterer. After Mom’s death in 2015, we both retired.
I worked for the State of Oregon’s Adult and Family Services for a short time as a parent educator. My job was working with high risk families.
It would seem that volunteerism runs strongly in my family. I watched my parents be a part of The Red Cross for so many years. They would be gone for weeks at a time dealing with large disasters in the Pacific Region. My passion is Hospice. I volunteered in several capacities at my local Hospice for over twenty years. Todd and were both involved with SMART, which is a reading program for elementary students.
Todd and I took 6 years to build our straw bale home. Because of our geographical location, this past year we have been doing all we can to protect our 5 acre property . This includes multiple fire mitigation projects.

We are the proud grandparents to Emma, Jackson, Herbert, Richard, Clover and Alder, and great grandparents to Ava and Brooks.

I really was not involved in Iowa until my Dad’s death in 2010.We travel back to West Branch, Iowa, where the Presidential Library Museum is located, 3-4 times a year. We have a house there, which makes life much easier when we are there for extended times. As a Trustee, and member of the USA Committee it keeps me busy while I am there. We will be returning in June to be a part of the USA weekend when we meet the final participating students, and “school” them in all things Hoover.
August brings Hoover Hometown Days to West Branch. It includes many family oriented activities, and serves as a de facto  reunion time for my children and cousins.
After Lou Henry’s death in 1944, her papers were sealed for 50 years. This was a family decision at the time. I didn’t even know of her existence until 1985! The minute I found out about her, I could not learn enough. I have become the Lou aficionado for the family. I am extremely proud of this. When Lou Henry died, she willed her diamond solitaire to her oldest grandson. That was Dad. He was 16 at the time, and would not present it to my Mom until 1949. In 2015, I inherited it. My only regret is that the diamond cannot talk. Oh, the stories it could no doubt tell.
I always enjoy when I can go into the schools and talk about both Lou Henry and Great Granddad. Interacting with young students is always satisfying.
We also love to travel, and have been blessed to see so many wonderful places in the world.
